Today, at the birthday party of Cedric, Miles improved his crawling technique. He hasn’t quite figured out the forward mode yet, but he is really good in backward mode. It even got him stuck under the couch.

Today we celebrated the 35th wedding anniversary of Luk and Magda. They had invited their complete offspring for a dinner in the fancy restaurant “Spaans Dak” (Spanish Roof), a historical building in the middle of a forest. So we went for a walk in the forest, among the fall colors and the fallen leaves. According to strict family tradition, Luk and Magda were subjected to some serious challenges before they could get their present from their children. The concept was simple: do something the other is good at. You can ask help, but it comes with a handicap. For instance: Magda has trouble reaching things in high closets. So she had to get a glove out of a tree. Luk could help her, but he had to do so blindfolded (we didn’t anticipate on her climbing the tree). Or this: Luk had to guess the names of some plants, based on their picture. Magda could help him, but she was not allowed to speak. Then Magda – who suffers from a mild form of technophobia – had to make a little video with our digital camera. Luk helped her by merely pointing his nose at the right buttons.

And finally, Luk had to perform some knitting, and Magda was allowed to help him but had to refrain from using certain words, like “over” – essential knitting jargon. They completed every task successfully and in the process they learned they really complement each other – Oooh… We gave them a bicycle tourist guide of France, Italy, Great-Britain, Australia of New Zealand (they had to sleep over it one night).

By now we’ve been in Belgium for about a month and a half, and things are finally falling into their place it seems. Finally I find the time to update our blog. An update:

On August 14th Wiet worked his last day at Hord Architects. After that UPS packed up our stuff on August 19th, and on August 21st we left Memphis. All week long we had been saying goodbye to colleagues, friends and family. At the airport we gave Sheila and Bob one last hug, and got on the plane. Miles handled the flight very well: only when taking off from Atlanta he cried a little bit. Miles slept and played in the bassinet we had reserved, and before we knew it we had crossed seven time zones and touched down in Brussels. When we walked through the gate an enormous cheering erupted from the crowd: no less than 36 people had come to welcome us. We had been feeling tired, but suddenly we felt energized.

We stayed at Wiet’s parents’ house for a week running around like crazy, seeing friends and family, filling out paperwork, and checking on our house in Schaarbeek. On September 1st Wiet started working for the regional government of Flanders again. We tried living in our house in Schaarbeek but it wasn’t ready. We moved back to Wiet’s parents’ house and returned to Schaarbeek to work in our house as much as we could. Thanks to a lot of help from friends and family we moved back to Schaarbeek a little later. The house dates back to 1906 and hasn’t been updated for a couple of decades now. So it is a charming house, but not very comfortable. Little by little we are improving the house, and every day is a little better than the day before.

Meanwhile Heather started working at BALT engineering, the one man architecture and engineering office of our friend Tim. Miles started going to the daycare center Minimabo. It is a great place and Miles doesn’t mind going there, but it is a bit of a hassle every morning, so pretty soon he will be changing to another daycare around the corner.

In between all that work there’s been some time for play too, fortunately. We celebrated Heather’s 31st birthday at the IKEA store. Heather had to perform some tests to get her present, like “helicoptering” – swinging around on an office chair as often as you can. We brought our own cake and chocolate milk, and sat down in one of the kitchens on display. Heather blew out some candles. Lots of shoppers gave us funny looks. Good fun.

So we are slowly getting used to this new chapter. It will be a couple more weeks before the last box is unpacked, and probably a couple more years before our house is as comfortable as we want it. We are enjoying seeing old friends and family again, but we miss Memphis too. We miss the Memphis weather, but more still we miss the friends and family we left behind. We hope we can come and visit soon, and in the meantime we can mail, email, call, skype, facebook and blog.

De stad Memphis is gesticht op een “bluff”, de geografische term voor een stijle oever. Elke keer dat de Mississippi rivier overstroomde, bleven de bluffs gespaard. Niet moeilijk dat hier al lang voordat er sprake was van de Verenigde Staten een nederzetting stond. Indianen hadden er een vestiging, de Fransen bouwden er een fort en later de prille VS. De plek in Memphis waar die fasen van de geschiedenis allemaal te zien zijn is het Ornamental Metal Museum: er ligt een Indiaanse grafheuvel die de Fransen later uitholden voor de verdediging van het fort, en de Amerikaanse marine bouwde er een hospitaal. In een van de gebouwen van dat – nu lege – hospitaal zit het nationaal museum voor smeedkunst. En dat museum heeft een prachtige beeldentuin, met uitzicht over de Mississippi. En hier organiseert vrijwilligersradio WEVL elk jaar zijn benefietconcert “Blues on the Bluff”. Dit allemaal ter verklaring van de titel…
Bethany en een vriendin, Megan, trokken samen met ons erheen. Alleen al aan de auto’s op de parking zag je al gauw dat dit geen Rock Werchterachtig festival is: veel hybride wagens, een mini Cooper, en opvallend weinig pick up trucks. In de beeldentuin (“op de wei”) werd het nog duidelijker: afgezien van de kinderen die door hun ouders waren meegetroond waren wij zowat de jongste festivalgangers. Veel culture vultures, Memphianen van gemiddelde leeftijd, ja zelfs enkele fietsers, het Radio 1-publiek, zeg maar. Het aantal zwarten was op één hand te tellen.
We zochten ons een zacht streepje gras onder een dikke boom en maakten het ons gemakkelijk. Megan vertelde ons over haar tatouages. De tatouage op haar enkel had ze samen met haar moeder laten zetten; ze hebben allebei dezelfde. En die gekleurde doodskop op haar rug, opgetrokken uit fruit (aardbeien als ogen) was een kadootje van haar grootouders. Megan was entertainend gezelschap.
Ondertussen gaven de muzikanten het beste van zichzelf in de kiosk van het museum. Kenny Brown gaf een staaltje van back to basics blues: een man met een gitaar, die treurt over hoe zijn wijf ‘m geleft heeft. Daarna vrolijker werk met de Bo Keys, een groep van zwarten en blanken, intussen ook van middelbare leeftijd. Ze hebben een ijzersterke blazersectie, en hebben goed geluisterd naar de soul van het legendarische Stax Records. De zon ging langzaam onder boven de rivier, de dansvloer liep vol, de muzikanten hadden er zin in. Toen de bassist de wahwah inzette van Theme from Shaft kon mijn avond niet meer stuk.

Voor wie het nog niet wist: op 22 augustus staan we terug op Belgische bodem, en deze keer blijven we er. Wiet heeft het nieuws afgelopen week meegedeeld op zijn werk, en daarmee is het nu helemaal officieel. Onze paperassenmolen draait op volle toeren: we hebben vliegtickets, we wachten op een offerte om onze spullekes te verschepen naar Schaarbeek, en een kleine wervelstorm aan formulieren is onderweg vanuit Washington en Brussel om de hinkstapsprong over de oceaan zo vlot mogelijk te laten verlopen. We schakelen over naar afscheidsmodus.

Na zijn eigen vingers heeft Miles nu ook de smaak te pakken voor Wiet zijn oor. Help!
